UNC graduate student charged with murder in fatal shooting of associate professor

A University of North Carolina (UNC) graduate student has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of an associate professor.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Jingbiao Wu, was arrested on Tuesday. He is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 53-year-old Feng “Jason” Shi, an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UNC.

The shooting occurred on Monday night at Shi’s home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Wu and Shi were acquaintances, and police believe that the shooting was a result of a domestic dispute.

Wu is being held without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Shi’s death has shocked the UNC community. He was a well-respected researcher and teacher. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The shooting is the latest in a series of gun violence incidents on college campuses in the United States. In recent months, there have been shootings at schools in Texas, California, and Colorado.

The UNC shooting has raised questions about campus safety. UNC President Kevin Guskiewicz said that the university is taking steps to increase security, including adding more police officers and security cameras.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of Dr. Shi,” Guskiewicz said in a statement. “He was a valued member of our community, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

The UNC shooting is a tragedy, and it is a reminder of the dangers of gun violence. It is important to take steps to keep our schools safe, and to support the victims of gun violence.

In addition to the steps that UNC is taking, there are a number of things that can be done to improve campus safety. These include:

  • Enacting stricter gun control laws. This would make it more difficult for people to obtain guns, and would help to reduce the number of gun-related incidents.
  • Providing more mental health resources on campus. This would help to identify and address potential threats of violence before they happen.
  • Training students and staff on how to respond to active shooter situations. This would help to ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a shooting.

By taking these steps, we can help to make our schools safer and to prevent future tragedies like the UNC shooting.
