Novak Djokovic is back on top of the world. The Serbian tennis star defeated Alexandre Muller of France in straight sets in the first round of the US Open on Monday night, securing his return to the No. 1 ranking in the ATP rankings.
Djokovic, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles, had not played in the US Open since 2021 due to his vaccination status. He was unable to enter the country last year because of a mandate for foreign citizens traveling to the US.
But Djokovic was able to compete in this year’s tournament after the US Supreme Court blocked the vaccine mandate for international travelers. He made the most of his opportunity, winning his first match in two years in dominant fashion.
Djokovic defeated Muller 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 in just an hour and 36 minutes. He didn’t face a break point in the match and won 88% of his first-serve points.
“It feels great to be back,” Djokovic said after the match. “I’ve been working hard for this moment and I’m glad it’s finally here.”
Djokovic’s victory over Muller was his 84th win at the US Open, tying him with Jimmy Connors for the most wins in tournament history. Djokovic is now also just two wins away from tying Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam titles in history.

Djokovic’s return to the top ranking is a major victory for him. He had been in second place behind Carlos Alcaraz since February. But Alcaraz was unable to defend his title at the US Open after withdrawing from the tournament due to an ankle injury.
Djokovic’s victory also comes at a time when he is facing increasing scrutiny for his vaccination status. He has been unable to compete in several tournaments this year, including the Australian Open, due to his refusal to get vaccinated.
But Djokovic has shown no signs of backing down from his stance. He has said that he is willing to miss tournaments if he is not allowed to compete without being vaccinated.
Djokovic’s return to the top ranking is a reminder of his greatness. He is still the best player in the world, even at the age of 36. And he is not going to give up his title without a fight.
In the next round of the US Open, Djokovic will face Jenson Brooksby of the United States. Brooksby is a rising star on the ATP Tour and he will be a tough test for Djokovic.
But Djokovic is confident that he can win. He has won 23 Grand Slam titles, and he is not going to let anyone take his No. 1 ranking away from him.
